The
Genealogy Detective is based in the south west of England and
can provide a cemetery research service in this area. (Full UK
coverage is available at extra cost)*. The search will include
the local church if the cemetery is in the grounds of one.
* See the Zone Map for additional costs
If you know where your ancestor was buried, we can search
the relevant cemetery for the grave. If we find evidence of the
grave, we can transcribe the information from the headstone and
take a digital photograph as a record for you. The local church
may also hold inscriptions and records about your ancestor.
The information found on the gravestone, plus the chance of
finding other long lost ancestors in neighbouring plots, could
provide a valuable source of information that is not available
through searching other records.
The cost of Cemetery Research starts at £50 ($90)
per visit.

of burial, but preferably the cemetery. |

Request a quote for Cemetery Research by supplying the
information using the Cemetery
Research Quote Request Form

|
We return a quote for the cost of the Cemetery Research.

WHAT DOES CEMETERY RESEARCH INVOLVE?
Cemetery research is the process of physically visiting a cemetery
to search for a specific grave or headstone. If the cemetery
is in the grounds of a church, and there is access, the church
will also be visited to look for inscriptions and other information.
As there are many thousands of cemeteries (and several even in
a small town), it is extremely important to have a good idea
of where an ancestor has been buried, otherwise the potential
length of time to successfully locate an ancestor is unrealistic.
Once a grave has been located, information can (hopefully) be
transcribed from the inscription on the headstone. Sometimes
this can be difficult if the headstone has become very weathered.
If necessary, the Genealogy Detective will take a rubbing of
the headstone. In addition, a digital photograph will be taken
of the cemetery as a whole, and the gravestone, if located.
WHY WOULD I WANT TO REQUEST CEMETERY
RESEARCH?
Headstone inscriptions often include information about the parents,
and children of the deceased, in addition to the date of birth
and age at death. If required, the Genealogy Detective can search
the cemetery (and cemetery records, if available) for other headstones
carrying the same surname, which can provide extremely interesting
possible leads in extending a family tree. Sometimes, such links
to other family members may not be apparent through census searches.
WHICH CEMETERIES CAN YOU VISIT?
The Genealogy Detective is located in the Taunton area of
south west England, in the county of Somerset. Whereas any cemetery
in the UK is accessible, cemeteries within a 25 mile radius of
Taunton can be researched at the basic rate, with research costs
increasing as the distance increases from Taunton.
The basic travel costs for cemetery research are based on
travel zone distances, as shown by the map (right). The distances
are:
Zone A: 25 mile radius
Zone B: 75 mile radius
Zone C: 150 mile radius
Zone D: 300 mile radius
Zone E: Greater than 300 miles
HOW MUCH DOES CEMETERY RESEARCH
COST?
Much of the cost of cemetery research is due to the distances
travelled and time taken for searches. Cemetery research costs
are therefore based on the distance of the cemetery from our
base location (Taunton, Somerset, England), and the precision
of the information given. If the actual cemetery that the ancestor
is buried in is known, then this will keep the cost to a minimum.
Less information means more searching, more time, and greater
costs.
All costs are given here as a guide. If you decide that you
require cemetery research, you will be asked to provide the details
you have and request a quotation. The Genealogy Detective will
review the information and estimate the costs of the research
based on the travel distance, travel times, and potential research
time (number of cemeteries to search, number of graves per cemetery,
etc.).
Zone Costs:
Costs regarding distances (from Taunton, Somerset, south
west England) are based on the following:
Zone A: 25 mile radius (£50 [$90*] per search)
Zone B: 75 mile radius (up to £150 [$270*] per search)
Zone C: 150 mile radius (up to £400 [ $720*] per search)
Zone D: 300 mile radius (up to £800 [$1,440*] per search)
Zone E: Greater than 300 miles (up to £2,000 [$3,600*]
per search)
Additional Costs:
£50 ($90*) per additional cemetery to be searched (note:
if you know the town or city, but not the cemetery, then this
can become very costly).
£5 ($9*) per additional grave to be searched for in the
same cemetery
£25 ($45*) to search each cemetery for additional possible
family members
£10 ($18*) to search cemetery records (if available)
After Sales Services
After your cemetery research has been completed, you will
be offered the chance to purchase further services. Please see
see the section What Type Of Information
Will I Receive? or go to our full After
Sales Services page.
Please note: There may be additional charges incurred if the
cemetery is particularly large in size. These will be included
in the initial quotation.
HOW DO I REQUEST CEMETERY RESEARCH?
To request a cemetery search you will need to complete the Cemetery Research Quote
Request Form. You will be asked to give as much information
as possible to help narrow down the search and keep the cost
down. Knowing the cemetery that your ancestor was buried in will
provide the lowest price for cemetery research. Please remember
that costs will increase the further away from the Taunton area
that you require the search. When we receive your quote request
we will calculate the cost and send the information to you by
e-mail. The e-mail message will include a link to a payment page
that will allow you to make your payment for the service, should
you wish to proceed.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO COMPLETE
CEMETERY RESEARCH?
The time taken to complete a cemetery research will be dependent
on the number of cemeteries to be searched, the distance of the
cemeteries from our base location, and any other requirements
about research to be undertaken.
A local search can normally be completed in 7 to 14 days,
whereas a Zone E search will require considerably more planning
and may take up to 12 weeks.
All times given are not guaranteed (see Terms
& Conditions for more information).
WHAT TYPE OF INFORMATION WILL
I RECEIVE?
The results of the cemetery research will be e-mailed to you
and will include:
- A digital photograph of the cemetery visited
- Digital photographs of all relevant graves (headstones) that
have been located
- A written transcription of the information from each headstone
that has been located
- A report on the condition of the grave
Even if you have not requested a general cemetery search for
other family members, but the Genealogy Detective has noticed
other potential leads in the same cemetery (perhaps from adjacent
graves), you will be notified and asked if you wish for a second
visit to the cemetery.
In addition, you will be offered the following options:
- Large format printed copy of each digital photograph taken
- A beautifully presented printed certificate showing a picture
of the headstone, plus all the information transcribed from the
headstone, and other family details.
- The option for the Genealogy Detective to tidy up the grave
(if necessary), lay flowers, or to enquire about professional
grave management on your behalf.
