FAMILY TREE ENHANCEMENT If you haven't even started a family tree yet - don't worry. You can follow our simple instructions on How To Start A Family Tree, which will get you to a stage where you can then take advantage of this service. [ More information on How To Start A Family Tree ] If you have already conducted some research into your family tree, but have come to a dead end and can't go any further, the Genealogy Detective can pick up from where you've left off and attempt to add more information for you. As we have access to a huge amount of on-line and CD-ROM based information, we may be able to take the research further, and find more leads. All you need to do is either supply a GEDCOM (Genealogical Data Communication) file of your electronic family tree, which most of the genealogy software is able to do, or send a hard copy version to us in the post*. Note: There will be additional charges for transcribing existing hard copy information. Whereas some genealogy services request payment for research on an hourly basis, at the Genealogy Detective Family Tree Enhancement Service only charges you for the pieces of information uncovered. This means that you are more likely to see some results for your money. We will even give a partial refund if we cannot find as much information as you initially paid for. PRICES Only £5.00 ($9.00*) for each new ancestor name added to your family tree (Full prices). Only £1.00 ($1.80*) for each additional fact or detail added to existing ancestor records (Full prices). What is Family Tree enhancement? Why would I want to purchase the Family Tree Enhancement Service? What do I need to do to enhance my family tree? How long will it take to get the results? What type of information will I receive? How much does this service cost? What happens if you don't find any ancestors? THIS IS HOW IT WORKS... Request the Family Tree Enhancement service by making your payment via our secure on-line ordering system. You'll be asked to pay for a block of research, but will be partially reimbursed if we are unsuccessful.   Supply information about your existing family tree, preferably with an electronic GEDCOM file, or as a hard copy. You initially receive back information by e-mail stating how many ancestors we have traced. If we have reason to believe that we can find even more ancestors, we'll ask you to make a further payment to cover the research. Once the research is complete, you'll receive your updated family tree via e-mail as a GEDCOM file (or as a hard copy if you prefer). WHAT IS FAMILY TREE ENHANCEMENT? Family tree enhancement is the addition of one or more ancestors, or further details of known ancestors, to an existing family tree. Whilst the most exciting outcome is the addition of new ancestors to your growing family tree, there is also the opportunity to add further details about ancestors that are already listed (e.g. your ancestor's occupation). The Genealogy Detective can add additional ancestors and details to an existing electronic version of your family tree (preferred), or transcribe an existing hard copy family tree into an electronic format (required and at an extra charge). WHY WOULD I WANT TO PURCHASE THE FAMILY TREE ENHANCEMENT SERVICE? The Genealogy Detective has access to a wealth of on-line information, plus archived databases that have been compiled onto CD-ROM. Some of the information resources are available on-line for free (if you know where to look for it), whilst other information is retrieved through subscription services. Often, finding one vital piece of information provides clues for further research. All research conducted on your behalf by the Genealogy Detective will provide extremely high quality results, if there are records to find. If we cannot improve on the research that you have already conducted yourself, you will only be charged the base cost of £5 ($9*). This means you have very little to risk and a lot to gain from asking the Genealogy Detective to take a look at your existing family tree. WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO ENHANCE MY FAMILY TREE? The main thing you will need is an existing family tree! If you haven't even started a family tree yet - don't worry. You can follow our simple instructions on How To Start A Family Tree, which will get you to a stage where you can then take advantage of this service. As the Genealogy Detective bases most research on census information and other on-line databases, please remember that we will only be able to connect your existing tree with ancestors born before 1930 in the USA and 1901 in the UK. Your family tree will therefore at least need to include two or three generations to give us something to start with. Once you have a family tree that requires enhancement, you will need to make your payment for a block of research. We ask you to pay up front for searching up to 5 ancestors (a total cost of £25 [$45*]). After you have successfully made payment, you will be given instructions on how to submit your existing family tree, and asked for some preferences on the sort of information you are looking for (e.g. particular blood lines to be researched, types of details to be added, etc.). If transcription is required of an existing family tree, you will then also be asked to make this additional payment.   PRICE: Pre-payment of £25.00 ($45.00*) £5.00 ($9.00*) for each new ancestor name added to your family tree. £1.00 ($1.80*) for each additional fact or detail added to existing ancestor records. HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO GET THE RESULTS? Please allow up to 20 working days to complete each block of Family Tree Enhancement research. However, depending on our current work load, and ease of finding information, you may receive results much sooner. WHAT TYPE OF INFORMATION WILL I RECEIVE? Whether or not we are successful, we will send an e-mail report to confirm that the Family Tree Enhancement research has been completed. If the search is successful, the information will be added to a copy of your existing (or newly created) electronic family tree. The electronic version will be returned to you via e-mail (or as a hard copy in the post if you have purchased this option). A summary of the information that has been added to your family tree will be included in the report. It may be necessary to request a copy of a birth, marriage or death record from a records office in order to confirm a possible ancestral link. If this is necessary, the Genealogy Detective will advise you. We can then either supply the relevant reference numbers for you to obtain the records yourself, or the Genealogy Detective can obtain the records for you on your behalf. If you require the Genealogy Detective to obtain records on your behalf, there will be an additional charge, to cover both the charges levied by the records office, and to cover administration costs. HOW MUCH DOES THIS SERVICE COST? You'll be asked to pay for this research in blocks of £25.00 ($45.00*), but you will be refunded up to £20.00 if we cannot help you with your research. £5.00 ($9.00*) for each new ancestor name added to your family tree. £1.00 ($1.80*) for each additional fact or detail added to existing ancestor records. Transcription Costs (from handwritten printed copy) £0.50 ($0.90*) per ancestor If you currently only have a handwritten or printed copy of your family tree, the Genealogy Detective will transcribe the information into an electronic (GEDCOM) format. This is required to conduct the research, even if you only require a printed hard copy at the end of the research. You will be asked to make an additional payment for transcription costs, after you have placed your order and the Genealogy Detective has received your existing information. Hard Copy (Printed) Results £8.00 ($14.40*) including shipping If you require a printed copy of the results of your Family Tree enhancement, there is an additional charge to cover printing and mailing costs. Copies Of Records Advised when required. WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DON'T FIND ANY ANCESTORS? If we have been completely unsuccessful, you will be reimbursed up to £20 of the original £25 you spent on the research. Reimbursement will be proportional to the number of ancestors we have located.
